Rescue Under Pressure: The Sariñena Building Collapse

News

A recent emergency in Sariñena, Aragón, showed how complex rescue operations can become when responders are working in an unstable environment. After a building under construction collapsed, firefighters from the Zaragoza City Council joined the response. One worker was rescued alive from beneath the debris, while another sadly lost his life.

The operation required highly technical work. Because the damaged structure remained unstable, firefighters used precision monitoring equipment to detect movement in the building. Rescue activities had to be stopped several times when the structure shifted, highlighting the risks that emergency teams face while trying to save others.

For VIATICUM 2, this case is especially meaningful because Zaragoza is the city of one of our project partners. It is also a strong reminder that successful rescue depends on training, teamwork, risk assessment, specialised equipment and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure.

VIATICUM 2 supports the preparedness of volunteer rescuers through practical learning resources, updated rescue guidance and realistic training approaches. Cases like Sariñena show why emergency and rescue exercises must be practised before a real crisis happens: when every second matters, preparation can make a critical difference.
