Celebration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2026

News

Today, on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, we are reminded that resilience starts at home.

A safer community begins when people understand the risks around them, know how to respond to warnings, and are prepared to act when an emergency occurs. This year’s campaign highlights the importance of household preparedness, inclusive evacuation planning and practical action to reduce disaster risk.

But preparedness cannot stop at knowing what to do. When floods, wildfires, earthquakes or other emergencies occur, communities also depend on trained rescuers, civil protection teams and volunteers who can evacuate people safely, provide first aid, coordinate operations and respond under pressure.

This is where VIATICUM 2 contributes. Through practical training resources, updated rescue manuals, innovative learning approaches and Virtual Reality-based training for emergency scenarios, the project aims to strengthen the skills and readiness of volunteer rescuers across Europe. It also promotes cooperation and knowledge-sharing between rescue organisations in different countries.

Disaster resilience is built before an emergency happens. Regular training, realistic exercises and evacuation and rescue practice help turn knowledge into action. By preparing both communities and those who respond when every second matters, we can build a safer and more resilient Europe.
